Ezra 3: 1-6 The Bronze Altar and the Burnt Offering

What does it truly mean to give ourselves to God? Not just in the polished, presentable parts of our lives, but in every corner, every hidden room, every unglamorous ordinary moment? Drawing from the book of Ezra and the detailed instructions of Leviticus, this week we explored one of the most profound acts of worship described in all of Scripture: the burnt offering. When the Israelites returned from 70 years of captivity in Babylon, the very first thing they did was rebuild the altar. Not the walls of the city. Not even the temple itself. The altar. That single act tells us everything about what they had learned during those long years of loss. Worship was the most important thing. The burnt offering they brought on that altar was unique among all the sacrifices because the entire animal was consumed. Nothing was held back.
Woven into the specific details God prescribed for that offering, are four parts of the animal that speak directly to four dimensions of our own lives that we are invited to surrender: the head, the fat, the entrails, and the legs.
The head — our minds, renewed and shaped by His truth.
The fat — the best of our gifts, abilities, and strengths offered for His glory.
The entrails — our inner life, our motives, our hidden places brought honestly before Him.
The legs — our daily walk, the way we live, work, and relate to others.
The burnt offering is the response of a grateful heart — worship that touches every part of who we are.
Each one represents a real and deeply personal aspect of who we are. Together they paint a picture of what wholehearted worship actually looks like when it moves from concept to daily reality. This is not about earning God's favor. Christ's one sacrifice made us right with God forever (Hebrews 10:14). The burnt offering is the response of those who already belong to Him — a voluntary, wholehearted act of worship.
Is there any corner of your life still waiting to be placed on the altar? May today be a step toward giving Him all of it.
Practical Application: Set aside time today to worship God before you address anything else on your to-do list. Let worship be the first stone you lay.
Prayer: Father, teach me what it means to hold nothing back from You. As the Israelites rebuilt the altar first, let my heart return to worship before anything else. Take my thoughts, my gifts, my hidden places, and my daily walk — every part of me. Consume what needs to be surrendered, and fill what needs Your life. Make my whole life an offering of love to You. Amen!
