The Six Dimensions of the Communion Table

What if communion was never meant to be a just be a routine in church, but instead one of the most spiritually rich and layered experiences available to us as believers? This weeks sermon invites us to see the Lord's Supper as a multifaceted diamond, one that reveals a new dimension of God's love and purpose every time we approach it. Drawing from Luke 22 and 1 Corinthians 11, we are walked through six transformative themes embedded in communion: remembrance, thanksgiving, covenant, examination, unity, and anticipation. Each one carries real weight for how we live our daily lives.

1. Remembrance - Communion calls us to remember Christ's sacrifice in a way that shapes how we live today.

2. Thanksgiving - Even in suffering, Jesus gave thanks. Communion teaches us to live with grateful hearts.

3. Covenant - The cup reminds us of God's New Covenant, secured forever through the blood of Christ.

4. Examination - Communion invites us to honestly examine our hearts, confess our sins, and receive God's forgiveness.

5. Unity - As one body in Christ, we are called to love, forgive, and pursue reconciliation with one another.

6. Anticipation - Communion points us forward to Christ's return and the glorious feast we will share with Him in eternity.

When we understand that the bread and the cup are anchors connecting us to the sacrifice of Christ, the cross stops being a distant historical event and becomes deeply personal. This is a message that challenges us to come to the table with open hearts rather than going through the motions, and it leaves us asking a meaningful question: how differently would we live if we truly grasped what communion is pointing us toward?

Reflection: Is there an area of your life right now where you are waiting for circumstances to improve before you offer God genuine thanks? Bring that area to him today.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for Jesus and the sacrifice He made for me on the cross. Help me never to forget the depth of Your love and grace. May remembering His sacrifice shape how I live, love, and follow You each day. In Jesus' name, Amen.
